Our committee and members

This page explains who our members are, how committees work, and how you can follow or take part in the decision-making that shapes the National Park

Decision-making in the National Park

The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority is governed by committees made up of members who guide the organisation’s work. Their role is to make decisions on policies, planning applications and the long-term direction of the Park. Members are appointed from different backgrounds, with some chosen by local councils, others by the Welsh Government, and a number selected independently for their skills and experience. This balance brings together local knowledge with a national perspective, ensuring that decisions reflect both community needs and wider priorities.

Committee Structure

The Authority’s work is carried out through a number of committees. The National Park Authority Committee sets the overall direction of the organisation and is responsible for approving key strategies and plans. The Planning Committee focuses on development and land use, considering applications that affect the Park’s landscapes, wildlife and communities. Alongside these, the Audit and Scrutiny Committee monitors performance, budgets and governance, helping to ensure transparency and accountability. Each committee publishes its agendas, papers and minutes, and meetings are open to the public. Many meetings are also live-streamed so that anyone can follow the discussion.

Members

The members of the Authority play a vital role in shaping the future of the Park. Those appointed by the Welsh Government provide a national viewpoint and ensure that the Park’s work aligns with government priorities. Members from local authorities represent the communities that live within the Park boundaries, while independent members bring specific expertise and professional knowledge. Together they form a group that reflects a wide range of perspectives, making decisions that balance conservation, community well-being and sustainable development. A full list of current members, along with their roles and registers of interest, is available through the Authority’s website.

Public participation

The committees are not closed spaces. Members of the public can request to speak at meetings on matters that affect them, ensuring that local voices are heard in the decision-making process. Guidance on how to apply, along with the necessary forms, is provided online.

Supporting information

For those who wish to understand more about how the committees operate, the Authority also makes available a library of documents, the Code of Conduct, and full information about the Planning Committee’s work. These resources are published to ensure that the Authority remains open and accountable to the people it serves.
