Our community
Communities here are as much a part of the National Park as the mountains, rivers and woodlands.
Communities at the heart of the Park
Around 33,000 people live within the Park boundaries, and their involvement is vital to its future. The Authority works closely with local groups, businesses, and residents to support community well-being while caring for the Park’s natural and cultural heritage.
Local groups
Each year Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons National Park is visited by over 4 million people coming for 5.4 million days and spending more than £412 million here (2023 figures). Many local groups across the Park play an active role in community life, from heritage societies and arts groups to environmental organisations and walking clubs. We work in partnership with these groups to share knowledge, support projects, and encourage people to connect with their local environment.
Sustainable development fund
The Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) is a grant scheme that supports innovative projects making a positive impact on communities and the environment. Local groups, voluntary organisations and businesses can apply for funding to deliver initiatives that encourage sustainability, strengthen community ties and protect the Park’s landscapes and heritage. Guidance and examples of past projects are available on our SDF pages.
Group visits for the community
We welcome community groups to the National Park and offer tailored visits for clubs, societies, and voluntary organisations. These visits can be designed around specific themes such as history, conservation or outdoor activities, and they provide a chance for groups to experience the Park in a meaningful way.
