Treescapes project

Treescapes is building resilient woodlands that protect wildlife, store carbon and connect communities to the trees of the future

Shaping the future of our trees

Treescapes is a long-term programme to restore, protect and expand tree cover across Bannau Brycheiniog. It focuses on creating resilient woodlands that can withstand the pressures of pests, diseases and climate change, while also safeguarding the ancient and veteran trees that define our landscape.

Why Treescapes matters

Trees are central to the health of the Park. They store carbon, improve air and water quality, provide homes for wildlife, and shape the places where people live and visit. Yet they face serious threats — from ash dieback and invasive species to changes in land use and extreme weather. Treescapes is our response to these challenges, ensuring that the next generation inherits thriving, diverse woodlands.

What the project involves

Treescapes brings together the National Park Authority, landowners, communities and conservation partners to deliver practical action. This includes planting native species, restoring existing woodlands, and linking habitats through new hedgerows and corridors. The project also works to map and protect ancient trees, recognising their cultural as well as ecological value. Education and community involvement are at the heart of the programme, giving people the chance to take part in caring for the trees around them.

Looking ahead

By investing in Treescapes now, we are laying the foundations for the Park’s future. The project is not only about planting trees, but about creating healthy ecosystems that support wildlife, protect soils, reduce flooding and provide spaces for people to enjoy. Through science, planning and community action, Treescapes is building woodlands that will continue to benefit both nature and people for generations to come.
